Specialized Investment Funds (SIF)

A newer SEBI asset class sitting between mutual funds and PMS or AIF, giving access to more flexible strategies from a Rs 10 lakh entry.

Specialized Investment Funds (SIF) are a newer SEBI asset class introduced in 2024-25, positioned deliberately between traditional mutual funds and the PMS or AIF world. They allow more flexible strategies, including long-short approaches that can take both positive and negative positions, going beyond what a conventional mutual fund can pursue while remaining a regulated, pooled vehicle.

The minimum investment is Rs 10 lakh, which makes genuinely sophisticated strategies accessible at a lower ticket than PMS or AIF. That lower entry does not make them low-risk. SIF strategies can use derivatives and leverage, and a long-short book can lose on both sides if the market moves against it. Returns are market-linked and never assured, and some strategies can experience meaningful drawdowns. Because the category is new, live track records are short, so past performance offers limited guidance.

We treat SIFs as tools for informed investors, not as novelties to chase. Before you commit, we explain exactly how a strategy seeks its returns, where the risks sit, what it costs, and whether it genuinely improves your overall portfolio rather than simply adding complexity. For some investors a straightforward mutual fund or PMS mandate remains the better answer, and we will say so. A SIF should add value on a risk-adjusted basis, not just variety, and we hold every strategy we consider to that standard.

Why RS Capital

As the specialised arm of Arjun Financial Services, RS Capital is founder-led by Rajesh Srivastava (Chartered Wealth Manager, USA and ICWA finalist) with over 20 years of markets experience. Because SIF is a young category, disciplined due diligence matters more, not less: our focused four-person team scrutinises fund managers, mandates, strategy design and risk controls rather than chasing what is new. We recommend a SIF only when it clearly earns its place in your plan, and never simply because it is the newest option available in the market.

Curious how a SIF could complement your existing portfolio? Book a suitability consultation and we will assess fit, risk and eligibility together, with no obligation.
